Have you ever had an experience of scare to step into your doctor's room?
Have you ever had the moment to worry of whats the result of any of your medical check up?
Have you ever had sleepless nights due to the fearness to listen what is your doctor is going to tell you after you received a phone call from receptionist to ask you to go back to the clinic regards to your report?
Have you ever thought of all these above will happen to yourself one day?
For the last question, my answer is NO ! Because I have the confidence of my health and I am still very young. I believed that I will be fine even though I still choose to do regular check up. Why not? In Australia it is free and the country encourage us to do so.
I have done many medical check up and everything is perfect. Of course, I expected !
But guess what, I just turned 30 and I started to hear people telling me women who has turned 30 will have the high risk to dinogse any kind of diseases / cancers especially breast cancer and cervical cancer. I was like, yeah well I am still at early age of 30, not that soon and I still believing I am healthy as long as I take care of myself. But guess what, its never turn out as the way you thought. Like we always said, "Things can be happened UNEXPECTEDLY or UNNOTICABLE."
I did my second
Pap Smear last week which is after two years from my first
pap smear.
Pap smear is to be done every two years. Simply to say, pap smear is just a simple but abit uncomfortable procedure to collect cells from the cervice to test for any abnormal. With this simple test the doctor is able to detect any sign towards cancer. Women should have this test done as soon as they have started sex life.
Two days ago I received a phone call from the medical centre and the receptionist advised me that my doctor needed me to go back to her for my result. I know she wouldn't be able to provde any information to me but I still asked her if the result is bad. None of my medical check up I needed to go back to see my doctor because everything was fine. This call made me worry to the max ! First time ever my doctor needed me to go back to her. I knew it is something negative because I clearly remember she told me before that I will not hear from her if result comes back normal. What for? She will only call her patients if any medical check up result is abnormal.
Lucky it was only two nights to spend before I went to see her this morning. Yes, deep down in my heart I know it is something no good and I was living like a zombie for the last 2 years not knowing what should I do. At the same time I tried to be optimism to think maybe she will tell me I am pregnant, that is why I needed to go back to her to start my pregnancy check up. I was really hoping that.
When I was waiting for my turn to see her, I saw a couple came out from her room and the girl was crying all the way out. I thought what happen to her? She has cancer? Disease?
After another patient it was my turn. Walked into her room as usual and she is a god damn funny doctor. She usually started with a laugh or a joke but this time she straight to the point to tell me the reason she asked me to come back is the pap smear result. She started to tell me that she needed to see my file first because she got two
abnormal results come back and one is in high risk. She couldn't remember which one is mine. While she was checking my file on the system I was praying the high risk is not mine.
She showed me my report and told me " You are in high risk towards the cervix cancer, but it doesn't mean you have cancer now, don't worry." I still controlled my feeling and tried to concentrate on what is she going to tell me. There are many stages to go until I will dinogse cancer. Luckily I am still at very early stage which is called Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia Grade 3 which consider as high grade. And this abnormal is caused by an virus called Human Papillomavirus. Half way of her speech, my tears rolled down and my doctor gave me some tissues to comfort me by saying "Sor G, its small thing, it can be solved and that is why Australia wants us to do Pap smear regularly. It is to detect any bad sign at the very early stage before it gets to the cancer. We are lucky to be in Australia because we have such service. See. Anita Mui, she was dead because of this cervix cancer due to no encouragement from any party or person to do check up regularly." I was like, please don't tell me a story of a dead person. Give me some hope, tell me some surviving stories instead.
Anyway my next step is to book a specialist to do a small surgeory called
ColposcopyColposcopy is a 10min procedure where the doctor inserts a magnifying device into your cervix to have a closer look. If there are some bad cells there will be burnt by a laser internally. Well I was told by my doctor it is not pain at all but uncomfortable.
I stepped out of the room and walked to my car and thinking what should I do now? Just go home, I am tired and lost. I cried all the way back home and was alone. My tear blured out my vision on the road. All I thought was if this issue can't be solved, what will happen to Adam? I don't want to leave Adam so early. I don't want him to grow up without me. My perspective is when you bring a child to this world, you must ensure your child to live in a happily condition, not to suffer. Now I am not sure if I can do that for Adam. I know it is too early to say that but it is mother nature to feel that straigtaway.
I just wish that I will be fine. I am not scare to go through any treatment or anything I need to do to cure this. But one thing for sure now is that I don't think I will try to have second child now. This has to put on hold until everything has sort out alright.
So to all my girl friends and their friends out there, if you have not have any pap smear yet, I advise you better get it done. Take care.
